How I Like to Use Lipliners:  Why You Need Some

Lipliners are a staple in your makeup collection.  Here are a few ways I like to use them:

  • To make some nudes more wearable for darker skin tones
  • To warm up pink lipsticks that are too pasty or light
  • Lipliners can be worn by themselves for a really cool matte, opaque lip look
  • To make all my bold lipsticks look super clean and crisp!

If you enjoy wearing bright lip colors and love the effect of sharp edges with them, lip liners will be your best friends!

Extra Benefits of Wearing Lipliners for Women of Color

If you’re a woman of color, as stated above, you will get a ton of use out of lipliners.  They make those pinks we love but are intimidated by, more wearable and less frightening!  They also warm up our most coveted nudes, but are afraid to purchase.  Pretty much a great lipliner can save a look you’re attempting to pull off, with very little effort!

Although there have been quite some advancements with color ranges in beauty brands lately, sometimes you still run into a few that have missed the mark.  Lip color, just like foundations, need to come in a range of colors for women of color to be able to pull them off with ease, and not so much work.  So brands need not make a universal milky pink and stop there, there should a deeper undertone milky pink, a deeper nude with hints of chocolate, and so on.  They’re catching on, so praise God for that, lol!  But until then, utilize these lipliners to make more lip colors work for you and your gorgeous melanin!

How To Best Apply Lipliner for A Well Blended Effect

I prefer to apply the lipstick first, leaving a bit of room around the edges.  Then, I go in with a sharpened lipliner, carefully filling in the edges that I left clean.  I like doing it this way, because it kinda ‘seals in’ the lip as a whole, versus the liner first, and then filling in with lipstick.  A lot of times, when done that way, the liner and lipstick don’t blend in well enough, and you have to go over it again with lipliner anyway, lol!  So try it my way, and let me know how it works for you!

Again, here are my steps:

  • apply lipstick, straight from the bullet or with lip brush
  • leave room around the perimeter of your lips & don’t take the lipstick all the the way to the edge of line of your mouth
  • go behind your lipstick with a sharpened lipliner, being careful to line your lips and blend the liner into your previously applied lipstick color
  • press your lips gently against each other to marry the products!

3 Shades of Lipliners All Brown Skinned Ladies Should Try

Okay here we go, these are the top 3 lipliner shades I feel all women with a hint of melanin need in their lives!  I’m making these suggestions as a beauty blogger in addition to my decade long career as a pro makeup artist.  With that being said, I’ve done literally hundreds of beautiful brown faces, and can attest to these 3 shades being all I reached for majority of the time!

The Flat Brown

for your nudes

This is your basic brown liner.  I prefer the more neutral or cool toned brown—not the reddish one.  If you’re unsure of the undertone of your brown while shopping, swipe it on your hand, if you see hints of red or orange in the brown, it’s a red based one.  I don't suggest this kind of chocolate liner because you want a FLAT brown to not influence the tone of the lipstick too much!

I use the flat chocolate liner mostly for nudes!  It’s perfect to warm up those nudes that are little too light for your skin tone or can be used alone for a matte, edgy, chocolate lip—I LOVE doing this!

The Plum

for your pinks

My favorite type of liner is a good plummy toned liner!  They’re so versatile you can use them for your nudes and pinks.  When choosing your plum liner, try to get a tone that’s not too deep—so not too purple-ish, but more so like a true mauve or deep pink.  A great plum liner is probably the trickiest one to nail for women of color, so please be sure to check my recommendations below to see what I mean!

Again, the plum lipliner is absolutely perfect for making pinks easier to wear for Black/women of of color.  Women with tanned skinned a lot of times can’t just pop on a pink lip and walk out the door, sometimes, but not often, lol!  So this is where lipliners are clutch!  The plum lipliner will warm up those blue based/milky looking pinks, so that they’re not too harsh against your brown skin.  So aim for adding a touch of the plummy liner to your baby pinks, nudes, and super bright magentas!

The Currant

for your reds & berries

The currant lip liner is your deep burgundy or dark purple pencil.  It’s stunning alone for a sexy matte lip, but also incredibly useful.  It’s a cult fav for darker skinned women for its versatility and ability to dress up a look!

The current lipliner can be a game changer for making those red lipsticks that aren’t doing quite what you had expected them to do, come through!  It’s obviously great to pair with your berry lipsticks to make them look neat and crisp as well!

My Pro Favs

Here are some of my absolute favorite lipliners from each of the shades discussed above!  Some of these have been in my pro kit for years, while others are just my personal go tos. If you’re having trouble with where to start looking for some of these lipliners, they’re a great start.  If I only had the budget to pick 3 lipliners for my whole collections, I’d start with one from each of these sections!

The Possibilities Are Endless

The wonderful thing about makeup is that there are no rules, you can experiment as you wish, and what doesn’t work—just wash it off!  I’m for sure not suggesting you only buy 3 lipliners to fill out your stash, however as a minimalist I can dig that idea, lol!  Rather I’m just advising you on the 3 types you absolutely need first, and then if your budget and space allow for more, go for it!

One really dope in between product I failed to mention but I live for, are chubby sticks!  They’re not a lip pencil, but not a lipstick either, more of an “in between” product.  But these are phenomenal if you’re more into that and want to save money.  Here are some of my top chubby stick picks as well, in which I’ve also included in the chocolates, plums, and currants categories for you!

Makeup is an accessory, by all means, have fun!  Enjoy playing with your looks, and when you do, tag me so I can see them, lol!  I hope this has been helpful for you guys, and until next time, bye loves:-)
